Lumpkin Family Fund Spring 2017 Grant Recipients

Effingham Unit #40: $7,000 to encourage students in Effingham Unit #40 to adopt a healthy life style by exposing them to the benefit of eating foods that are grown in their own hydroponics gardening system.

Faith in Place: $15,000 to continue the expansion of Green Teams within congregations in East Central Illinois to facilitate projects in the areas of sustainable food and land use, energy and climate, and water preservation.

Illinois Environmental Council Education Fund: $25,000 to support education and outreach among citizens and lawmakers and to advance policies that protect the vital ecology of Illinois.

Midwest Pesticide Action Center: $3,500 to support the Midwest Grows Green education program in Urbana, which encourages residents to choose natural lawn care solutions through demonstrations at a public park.

Prairie Rivers Network: $25,000 to expand their support for regenerative and organic agriculture practices in East Central Illinois that heal soil, protect water and wildlife, and grow food crops that can be marketed and consumed by local communities.

Ride Illinois: $12,000 to support the creation of a municipal bicycle plan for the City of Charleston from Mattoon to Fox Ridge.

Sola Gratia Farm: $5,000 to expand access to and demand for fresh and healthy produce in low-income/limited access populations in Urbana and Champaign.

Sullivan Area Arts: $2,000 to support the establishment of a farmers market in downtown Sullivan and encourage consumption of local, healthy produce.

Village of Strasburg: $5,000 to install permeable pavers at the site of the weekly farmers market. 

Forefront: $35,000 to support the organizational development of nonprofit organizations across the state of Illinois through an annual conference, a peer skills sharing program, and networking and educational meetings in East Central Illinois.



Laura Huddleston joined The Lumpkin Family Foundation as our new Administrative Assistant in January 2016. She previously worked as the Children’s Librarian at the Mattoon Public Library.  Laura has a B.A. in Spanish and Secondary Education from Eastern Illinois University and has also worked in teaching and educational software fields.  Over the past several years she has served on the Illinois School Library Media Association’s Monarch Award Committee and as an advisory board member for RSVP of Coles County.  In 2014 she was honored as one of the JG-TC’s 20 Under 40 recipients for her work at the MPL. Laura was raised in Mattoon and returned here in 2004 with her husband and two children after teaching and working in Champaign-Urbana.
